Usable capacity: LiFePO4 can be discharged to 80–100% without damage to the cells. In practice most BMS (battery management system) configurations limit discharge to 80% DoD to extend cycle life further, but even at that limit, a 100Ah LiFePO4 delivers 80Ah of usable energy. An AGM rated at the same 100Ah delivers only 50Ah before hitting its safe discharge floor.

This means a 100Ah LiFePO4 and a 200Ah AGM bank deliver roughly equivalent usable capacity — but the lithium battery weighs a fraction of the lead-acid pair.

Weight: A 100Ah LiFePO4 battery typically weighs 24–31 lbs. A comparable 100Ah AGM weighs 60–70 lbs. For RVers watching payload capacity or mounting batteries in overhead or side compartments, this difference is significant. A 200Ah lithium bank weighs less than a single 100Ah AGM.

Maintenance: LiFePO4 is sealed and completely maintenance-free. No water checks, no equalization charges, no venting requirements. The integrated BMS handles cell balancing, low-voltage cutoff, overcurrent protection, and temperature management automatically.

Upfront cost: Expect to pay $250–$950 per 100Ah depending on cell quality, BMS features, and whether the battery includes Bluetooth monitoring. The price range is wide because the market spans entry-level batteries with basic BMS protection and premium batteries with active cell balancing, self-heating for cold weather, and extended warranties.

AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat)

AGM is the most common upgrade from flooded batteries in the RV market. It's sealed, spill-proof, and handles the vibration and irregular charging cycles of RV life better than flooded lead-acid. For occasional campers who don't stress their batteries heavily, it's a practical middle-ground option.

Cycle life: AGM batteries are typically rated for 200–500 cycles at 50% depth of discharge. The wide range reflects build quality — cheaper AGM batteries with thinner plates sit at the low end; heavy-duty AGM (often called deep-cycle AGM) with thicker plates reaches the upper end. At 500 cycles and a 50% DoD limit, an AGM bank cycled daily lasts roughly 1.4 years. Cycled weekly, that stretches to about 10 years — but most RV AGM batteries in real-world use fall well short of 500 full cycles due to partial charging and sulfation.

Usable capacity: The 50% DoD limit is a hard practical ceiling, not a guideline. Regularly discharging AGM below 50% (below 12.4V resting) accelerates sulfation, permanently reducing capacity. A 100Ah AGM delivers 50Ah of usable energy under normal conditions.

Weight: 100Ah AGM batteries weigh 60–70 lbs. This is a significant consideration for battery compartment placement and RV payload ratings.

In practice, many flooded RV batteries are replaced at 3–4 years.

Usable capacity: Like AGM, flooded lead-acid is limited to 50% DoD for reasonable cycle life. Deeper discharge is possible but accelerates sulfation and shortens service life.

Maintenance requirements: This is the category where flooded batteries diverge most sharply from the alternatives. Flooded cells require:

  • Monthly water checks and distilled water top-offs as electrolyte evaporates
  • Vented battery compartments — flooded batteries off-gas hydrogen during charging, which is flammable and requires ventilation to prevent accumulation
  • Periodic equalization charges (controlled overcharge at 15.5–16V) to break up sulfation and re-balance cells
